SYSTEM Information

In 2013, we tasked ourselves with a mission to develop “The Next Big Step in Audio.” But with an already well-established award-winning product line inclusive of our flagship MMSeven loudspeakers, what would that be?

And so began an extensive no-holds-barred assault 10-year journey of research and development with absolutely zero budget constraints to achieve SYSTEM, the pinnacle of dynamic loudspeaker and cable design. This product line is built-to-order and establishes industry benchmarks in tonality, transients, dynamics, transparency, holographic sound staging, and musicality. The successor to our venerable MM series of products and earning the spot as our new flagship series, Evolution Acoustics SYSTEM is “The Next Big Step in Audio.”

A summation of our cost-no-object approach on extreme limits of dynamic loudspeaker design, the result is an awakening. A loudspeaker that can convey massive dynamic crescendos with limitless capabilities yet draw the listener in to the most subtle and nuanced musical performances with remarkable transparency and captivating micro dynamic detail. Evolution Acoustics CAMDAL cabinetry is based on the principle of controlling resonance and vibration transfer through impedance variations across multiple layers of differing materials.  Our quest for the ultimate in enclosures has driven us to pursue the latest in materials science engineering and precision crafting those elements together to create a beautifully simple form with substantial density and extraordinary performance. The fully cross-braced enclosure wall thickness ranges from 2-inches to 4-inches and is comprised of a combination of 1/4-inch carbon fiber, up to 3-inches high density wood fiber panels, and up to 1-inch grade 6061 T6 aircraft aluminum, all bonded together with a high shear modulus industrial strength adhesive compound to further mitigate energy transmission.  The composite sandwich walls are undeniably rigid and dense without any one characteristic ring or resonance typically exhibited by solitary material construction. Leaving no stone unturned, these panels are further damped inside the enclosure on all surfaces by a proprietary 1/4-inch constrained layer damping pad assembly containing precise thicknesses of butyl mastic, closed cell polyethylene acoustic foam, mass loaded membrane, aluminum, and F1 ultra high-density wool felt.  This produces a cabinet wall cross section with as many as twelve layers, effectively obliterating any resonant signature. This fundamental absence of enclosure induced noise has a profound effect on SYSTEM loudspeaker performance yielding an impossibly low noise floor, allowing all the details to come through sans coloration. The CAMDAL enclosure is handsome and deceptively practical while simultaneously achieving maximum damping, stiffness, and mass.

The EXACT constant voltage series crossover is a tour de force in engineering. Far from a conventional dividing network, the EXACT filter circuit elevates performance to the outer limits of sonic possibilities, delivering much higher emotional content, not by added tonal warmth or artifacts, but by allowing the signal to be fully rendered, keeping it pure and completely faithful to the artistry of the original event.  This dramatic improvement is accomplished by isolating all the mechanical distortion nodes of each of the drivers and suppressing their influence on the overall sound, generating ruler flat frequency response, with incredibly low distortion. The electrical performance of the system is made more linear, yielding much tighter impedance deviations, or smaller phase shifts. This combines to create a loudspeaker that is more accurate, both sonically and electrically, resulting in much greater realism in both tonal reproduction and sound stage presentation. Unique to series crossovers, transients and dynamic contrast are maximized due to the drivers of the speaker being connected in series and directly to the amplifier outputs without any parts in the direct signal path to smear or color response. Only the finest copper parts are used throughout; large proprietary pure copper foil paper in oil capacitors, Clarity Cap Pur Copper Connect capacitors for larger values, Goertz copper foil inductors, Mundorf copper foil inductors, and Mundorf MResist SUPREME copper-nickel bifilar resistors. All components are carefully welded point-to-point with lead-free eutectic solder, and there are no thin PCB traces to restrict current flow.  Careful attention is made to the orientation, layout, and mounting of all parts by utilizing headphones to listen for any unwanted crosstalk, ensuring proper placement free from parasitic interaction.  Weighing in at an incredible 70 pounds and occupying almost six square feet of space, the EXACT crossover boards are mounted on anti-vibrational mounts in their own isolated enclosures separate and shielded from the drivers and any potential interference.  All aspects of this filter network have been painstakingly researched and analyzed to produce incredible micro and macro dynamic performance as well as the highest level of clarity in the industry.

Evolution Acoustics has long understood that conventional soft dome tweeters exhibit non-piston motion, whereby the material bends and flexes at amplitude, causing distortion and limiting high frequency extension. However, the textile material can often possess a very smooth and natural sound across the frequency spectrum. Higher tech rigid diaphragm materials like titanium, beryllium, and even diamond, which certainly solve distortion issues and extend upper frequency response, can often sound hard and somewhat artificial in reproducing certain types of textures.  For many years we employed pure aluminum ribbons in our speakers, which have amazing ultrasonic capabilities as well as extremely delicate and nuanced execution during soft passages. However, the issue with the pure ribbon was that it was both very fragile and delicate and had difficulties holding up sonically during very loud dynamic passages, exhibiting compression at the extremes.  The aluminum ribbon would also slightly “etch” a metallic sound into everything, and once you noticed that characteristic it became difficult to unhear. With both dome tweeters and pure ribbon tweeters, surface area played a big role in evaluating what we would want to achieve moving forward. There are many extraordinary dome and ribbon tweeters available, but the smaller size is simply not capable of matching the scale of the other drivers in SYSTEM. During grand dynamic swings, the tweeter needs to output with the same authority as the rest of speaker, otherwise the presentation will not be believable, like a mosquito on top of a wall of sound.  Considering all these factors we turned to a large 6-inch by 10-inch diaphragm silk-textile Air Motion Transformer tweeter. 

The SYSTEM AMT tweeter uses a folded pleated silk-textile diaphragm of a mere 0.0005-inch thickness. Its “voice coil” is a serpentine pattern of precision-etched aluminum, selected for minimal weight and high-power handling. Unlike a normal piston loudspeaker that excites the air by alternately pushing and pulling a cone or dome, the AMT Air Motion Transformer linearly squeezes and expands diaphragm pleats, moving the air load at a very high velocity. Because the moving mass of the Air Motion Transformer is extremely low and the magnetic structure very powerful, this combination results in extraordinarily high acceleration that yields amazing transients. The Air Motion Transformer diaphragm’s low mass and high output also allow for an unusually high combination of efficiency and wide frequency bandwidth attained in a single loudspeaker. The AMT is a dipolar transducer, making it act just like a live musical instrument, in many cases propagating as much sound to the front as it does to the rear. Therefore, we constructed an extremely sophisticated tuned rear chamber to ensure a perfectly balanced environment optimizing the tweeter’s performance. The diaphragm’s shape delivers wide dispersion in the horizontal axis but tightly controlled vertical coverage. This creates a wide soundstage while simultaneously minimizing unwanted reflections from floor and ceiling. Coupled with the EXACT crossover which completely flattens the frequency response while further lowering distortion, the SYSTEM AMT is the smoothest, most accurate, most dynamic, and transient capable tweeter in the market.

Alpha corundum or sapphire is an excellent material choice for critical midrange drivers because it is a very light yet extremely stiff and well-damped membrane. Employing this material, the ceramic CELL midrange unit from Accuton delivers on all fronts, transients, tonality, dynamics, and musicality. The 7-inch midrange driver has an ideal acoustic center, which is identical to our tweeter and woofers, allowing for all drivers to be mounted on a flat baffle for proper time alignment, without the need for complex stepped baffle or sloping cabinetry. Its’ uniquely designed underhung motor does not cover or block the backside of the inverted dome, eliminating the chance for reflections and energy storage, and the voice coil spans the full diameter of the diaphragm providing true piston action.  The accordion surround and a thin fabric spider center the moving parts with high linearity. It performs like an oversized inverted dome tweeter, very fast and able to fully integrate with the AMT for complete sonic coherence.

Each bass cabinet contains four 7-inch aluminum sandwich woofers from the CELL family of drivers. Perfectly matched to the midrange speaker, the exclusive convex honeycomb membrane is the best combination of flexural and torsional stiffness. It is virtually indestructible, even in the case of a very strong overload. The 7-inch aluminum honeycomb sandwich dome bass driver has an ideal acoustic center, identical to our AMT and CELL midrange. Its uniquely designed overhung motor combines the advantages of traditional overhung and underhung designs, delivering high linear excursion and ultra-low distortion. The exceptionally hard aluminum sandwich dome allows for negligible delay and energy storage. The hidden surround allows for reduced outer diameter maximizing surface area and enables linear excursion of 1 ¼-inches peak-to-peak, and the unique spider shape provides enormous excursion without compression. With four drivers in each SYSTEM enclosure providing an effective cone area equivalent to a 14-inch woofer with linear excursion of 1 ¼-inches controlled by four independent and exceptional motors with incredible transient capabilities, the mid-bass to subsonic-bass performance and integration is sublime.

Dr. Dan Russell of Kettering University Applied Physics Department states; “All rooms (a cavity volume enclosed by boundaries) have resonant frequencies at which the acoustic response to a source can be extremely large. The frequencies at which resonances occur depend on the shape and dimensions of the room. At a resonance frequency the response of the room will be divided into antinodes, where the pressure is maximum, and nodes, where the pressure is zero. In a room with hard walls, the pressure will always be maximum near the wall or in a corner when the room is driven at any of its resonance frequencies. If the source is located at an antinode for a given resonance frequency, the room response will be greatest. If the source is located at a pressure node for a given resonance frequency, the room will not respond no matter how loud the source is.”  Grasping these issues, it is no wonder there is such a challenge to get great, good, or even acceptable bass in your listening room. Evolution Acoustics provides adjustability in the lower frequencies to help alleviate these challenges, as with the previous MM line of loudspeakers. However, the newer version of amplification in SYSTEM products dramatically improves performance by lowering distortion even further with greater damping factor and higher power output with musicality that needs to be heard to be believed. SYSTEM AMP allows you to tune the bass specifically for your room. Not only does SYSTEM AMP reduce the effects the room may have on your sound, but you also can adjust the loudspeaker for personal taste. Some people prefer a warmer more romantic sound, while others prefer a cooler or more clinical one.  With a simple turn of a dial, you can select the type of sound you prefer. The other extraordinary factor is the ability to be able to adjust the amount of deep subsonic bass extension to fit your preferences and environment, with the capability to tune the woofers flat to DC if desired, the deepest bass response possible. While this is not necessarily needed, it is good to know that it is there if wanted. Be careful however, with 1200 WATTS RMS of power it is quite possible to overdrive the woofers if pushed to these depths. Because the discrete analog preamplifier section is precisely tuned to the resonance of the woofers and their tuning within the cabinet, performance is extremely well controlled and accurate. SYSTEM AMP is an amazingly deep, fast, musical, and accurate powered woofer.

Because of revolutionary modular construction which Evolution Acoustics is famously known for, SYSTEM loudspeakers can be configured in a wide range of models through simply adding plug and play modules. SYSTEM, or Select Your Speaker Through Exact Modularity, is a statement product providing audiophiles the ability to custom tailor world class reference loudspeakers to their specific needs. From a small sound studio to a large, dedicated listening hall, SYSTEM has the flexibility to accommodate any scenario. From low power single ended triode amplifiers to solid state kilowatt monoblocks, there is a SYSTEM to match. In addition, due to the modular design concept, these speakers can be expanded over time as the listening room grows, making it the last loudspeaker ever needed. SYSTEM is comprised of three module types. SYSTEM CORE houses the midrange and tweeter drivers with either a two-way EXACT crossover, best suited but not limited to low power and tube applications in a single tower array or a three-way EXACT crossover, best suited for high-power solid-state applications in a multi tower configuration. SYSTEM AMP is an active woofer module designed to be matched with the two-way SYSTEM CORE providing electronically filtered bass response to complement the MTM array, or as a standalone subwoofer, providing deep bass response down to 10Hz and below. SYSTEM BASS is a passive woofer module designed to connect to the three-way SYSTEM CORE crossover for full range performance. Additional SYSTEM AMP woofer modules are recommended to supplement the three-way setup as standalone subwoofers in a multi tower configuration to produce deep bass response down to 10Hz and below. No matter what combination is chosen, the sound footprint will be identical. It is not simply a matter of adding more components for higher resolution performance, but instead to achieve bigger room filling sound and ease of reproduction.

SYSTEM also includes a complete line of statement cables, designed to match the outstanding performance of SYSTEM loudspeakers. Built on a principle of full shielding with multiple individually insulated solid core wires wrapped around a massive central air core, SYSTEM cable products offer the best signal transmission commercially available, breaking all boundaries in high-end audio design. This collection goes far beyond imagination and must be heard to be believed. SYSTEM cables have the lowest noise floor with the most holographic and tonally accurate presentation, with exceedingly capable micro and macro dynamic capabilities. Passionate and meticulous hand craftsmanship is used to create this ultimate product, making no compromises. Each cable model undergoes years of testing and research before ever reaching the market to ensure optimum performance. We have upgraded our materials from previous statement Triple Run cable offerings as we now use Ultra-Pure Ohno Continuous Cast Copper in all our cable assemblies, air-spaced Teflon dielectric, and all solderless terminations, cold welded to ETI Brio Silver Rhodium connectors. Given our philosophy and cable geometry, this combination of materials yielded the best synergistic results possible. Further enhancements were made to the jacketing and cabling junctions. All SYSTEM cables are wrapped in a conductive carbon mesh which essentially eliminates all air born static. In addition, a multi-weave soft filament covering helps to significantly reduce vibration transfer and unwanted microphonics. Additional steps were taken to provide a wire junction housing machined from solid aluminum to provide an elegant spring which functions not only as a cable strain relief but also as a shock absorber to stop any additional micro vibrations. We offer the SYSTEM SC speaker cables, SYSTEM PC power cables, SYSTEM RCA single-ended interconnects, and SYSTEM XLR balanced interconnects. While any individual cable on its own will produce fantastic results, it is highly recommended to use an entire loom of SYSTEM cable products. The result in any given stereo system is sublime. This is primarily because all the cables in this lineup utilize the same materials and geometry, which is typically unheard-of, yielding amazing synergy of performance.
